Moving to Prague, end to end: the visa we wish someone had drawn for us
When we started, the Prague long-stay process looked like a wall of forms. It’s not actually that bad — it’s just that nobody lays out the order. Here’s the version we wish we’d had.
Before you touch an application
Get these in one folder, because every later step asks for them:
- A passport valid well past your intended stay
- Proof of purpose (admission letter, work contract, etc.)
- Proof of accommodation in Czechia
- Proof of funds
The single biggest delay we hit wasn’t the embassy — it was a document from back home arriving late. Start the slow paperwork first, before you book anything.
The order that actually works
- Lock your purpose document (school or employer).
- Sort accommodation proof — even a short initial lease counts.
- Gather funds proof and get translations done early.
- Book the consulate appointment (these fill up; book as soon as you’re eligible).
- Submit, then wait — and don’t make non-refundable travel plans around an optimistic date.
What we’d tell a friend
Build in a buffer of a few weeks you don’t think you’ll need. You’ll need it. The people who had a smooth time weren’t lucky — they just started the boring documents a month earlier than felt necessary.
