The education loan process, demystified

Loans were the part we understood least and stressed about most. The good news: the shape of the process is the same whether you’re headed to Prague, France or anywhere else. Here’s the map.

The rough sequence

  1. Work out the real number — tuition plus living costs plus a buffer, not just the sticker price.
  2. Compare a few lenders before committing. The first offer is rarely the best one.
  3. Get your paperwork ready — admission proof, cost estimates, co-applicant docs.
  4. Apply, then push — gentle follow-ups genuinely move things along.
  5. Read the repayment terms properly. The moratorium period and interest treatment matter more than the headline rate.

The thing nobody mentions

Interest often starts accruing before you’ve earned a cent. Knowing exactly when the clock starts changes how much you actually borrow.

This one’s general on purpose — the lender and currency differ by country, but the moves are the same everywhere.
